I have to thank the people of Ealing North who sent me ba
ck to Westminster to speak on their behalf and to fight for what matters to all of us living in the area.
I’ve been paid the greatest possible honour and I’ll do my level best to be worthy of their trust.
Given the choice between a win and a loss I’d obviously go for victory but I can’t ignore the reality that for every winner there is a loser and my heart goes out to Ian Gibb and his family.
Losing can be hard and can be a bit cruel. None of us go into politics without accepting that we can suffer a crushing defeat as much as we can swim on a tide of euphoria but it really does take a heart of stone not to feel huge sympathy for Ian and I wish him every happiness and success in the future – if not on the hustings in Ealing North!
Here in Parliament the world has been turned upside down.
Not only are there about 250 new members bumping into each other and walking into cupboards but the political reality of the most bizarre political realignment in recent history takes some getting used to.
Liberals and Tories in the same bed may be extraordinary but the sheer rapacious enthusiasm for slashing public spending that is being shown by some of the yellow fold makes me wonder if I was ever right to characterise them as gentle herbivores in vegan sandals.
It’s like seeing a meerkat ripping shreds off a grazing gazelle and I won’t pretend that I don’t find it hard to accept.
A growing number of Mr.Cleggs troops apparently feel the same way if the conversation in the tea room is representative.
David and Nick do seem to have forged a close alliance and it’s like the opening scenes of Brokeback Mountain to see them strolling through the sunshine in their matching suits and gently contrasting pastel ties.
The cuts have now started and I am convinced that the Coalition has gone too far too soon. Taking money out of the economy risks choking off the recovery and it is economic illiteracy to pretend that the UK situation is analogous to that of Greece.
I dread to imagine the impact on our part of the world and I’ll be doing all that I can to both protect vital public services and to make the case for continuing sustainable economic growth.
We now discover that the economic indicators published just before the election underestimated the national economic growth – especially in the manufacturing sector. If some rascally civil servant was responsible then I wish her or him well with the new Gradgrinds whose hands are on the tiller and round the neck of the public sector.
Much work lies ahead and I won’t have the opportunity to take a break but I’ll never forget that I’ve been trusted to speak up for Ealing North and that is exactly what I will be doing in the grim days ahead.
Dear Steve, Re yesterday’s Guardian article by Gary Younge on the fate of a migrants’
charity (see also letters today) I am appalled that many vulnerable people’s records
may be lost, dumped or worse. On Sunday the Observer carried a three page feature
about a youngster from Afghanistan who experienced nothing but care and kindness on arrival in England, was so well taught in a Northolt school that now he is doing
brilliantly at Cambridge. What a contrast in 2 days news. Help! Pam.
Hi.
I listen to you on my ipod on the way home from the pub saturday night and your the first MP that actually sounds intelliget and on the ball. You nailed the nonesene terror plot and quickly put it in context. But you are stuffed away on the booze slot because you are smart. Keep pushing for the big job!
Just brilliant……..keep up your good work.
Just watched you again on Sky. Gosh, wish you were my MP! You are intelligent (very), great sense of humour and above all – HUMAN! Never voted labour in my life but if you were my MP – definitely! Thank you for restoring my faith in Parliament. Well, your patch, anyway. Am an OAP and think you are a statesman. Not many of those around anymore!
Mr Pound
As a resident of Ealing, I am sitting here watching you on Sky News and cannot believe your views on David Cameron when your former leader is paid as the Middle East Peace envoy and what has he been seen as doing recently – NOTHING. Two years in his role and the Middle East has fallen apart – OK he toook much longer in demolishing the UK ecomony but how dare you criticise David Caneron when your party have brought us to the brink not only here but then sanctioned your former leader to go forth and multiply damage across the world.
PLEASE, when ‘representing’ your party on TV you do not insult your consituents/citizens any further…
Very impressed finding my name and email box to reply from already correctly spelled when opening your clever site. Please see invitation for Hammersmith Rotary Club 85th charter anniversary as sent to Greenford Club. Yours CvL
Dear Mr Pound, on this, the anniversary of Bill Hicks’ death, I have seen that you raised an early day motion (EDM 678 of the 2003-2004 session) and wanted to congratulate you. It is not very often that I feel politicians are of the real world, you sir, obviously, are one.
Thank you
Thank you for keeping it real. I normally don’t do the politician thing, but you seem to be a guy who has his feet firmly on the ground. Keep up the good work.

FISH FIGHT CAMPAIGN
02.12.2010
Goldsmith, Zac
That this House welcomes the resolution of the `Fish Fight’ campaign to eliminate the environmentally and economically damaging practice of discarding fish before landing; is concerned that up to half of all fish trawled in the North Sea are thrown back either dead or dying; further welcomes the campaign’s support for the sustainable use of discard species by retailers, suppliers and restaurants to stimulate the creation of new markets for lesser known species; and calls on the Government to demand strong reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy to institute a regionalised, ecosystems-based management framework which incentivises the use of selective gear, uses real-time management, including temporary closures, and establishes ecosystem catch quotas rather than single-species landing quotas.
I am strongly supporting the above and if your not familiar with campaign then see http://www.fishfight.net/
Steve, next time you see William Hague, could you please ask him if I can expect a tax rebate for the RAF, which we clearly no longer need, and if he is going to allow Gadaffi to murder his own people could he adopt a more conciliatory tone with him because there will no one else left at the rate things are going.
Dear Mr Steve Pound,
I am writing to express my strong condemnation of the current massacre being perpetrated against the Bahraini people by Bahraini, Saudi, and Emirati armed forces. As a member of your constituency, I urge you to introduce and/or support legislation in Parliament which condemns this barbaric behaviour and suspends UK aid to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain until Saudi Arabia and the UAE withdraw their troops from Bahrain. I am pleading with you to help us untill the Bahraini government withdraws all local and foreign troops, respects its people’s rights to peacefully assemble and protest, and allows for free and fair elections in the country.
Respectfully yours,
Zahra
Please do something.. anything to help
Steve, I’ve stopped smoking(11 days!), which means I may have enough puff to join
the march at RCN Headquarter in Cavendish Square, please walk with me, I haven’t been on a march for a long time and could do with your company.
The March starts on Victoria Embankment and ends in Hyde Park. Marchers will begin gathering
before 11am and the intention is that the march will commence at 12pm. It is estimated the march
will take at least one and a half hours to get to Hyde Park.
Each union has a designated assembly point at the start of the march running along the Victoria
Embankment. The RCN’s assembly point will be clearly marked with our sail flags and RCN branding.
The exact location of this point is on the map at the back of this briefing.
This area will be get very busy, very early on so we are asking any members to try to get to this
point before 11am if possible.
The RCN’s HQ in Cavendish Square will also be open from 9am?10am for members to come along
for tea, coffee and breakfast and pick to up a t?shirt and other materials. From 10am members and
staff will travel down in groups to the assembly point.
Is it true that Tony Blair & Gordon Browne have not received invites to the royal wedding? I’m by no means a royalist but if they havent it’s a disgrace – of course maybe they don’t want to go. They may be busy shopping or something?
hope you will be supporting end to fish discard loonacy……….
Dear mr pound we met several years ago in the greenwood pub near the cod father chip shop you opened the pub has closed down since we talked about the bus lanes in northolt where the clock is on the village green where a young man was stabbed to death recently the tributes are a sad sight the traffic is at a stand still when the bus lanes are in operation causing mayhem can we scrap them so our children don’t have to breathe in deadly exhaust fumes
Dear Steven Pound,
I am writing in response to the article, on how Residents of the Northolt Borough, whom of some are in or under care. and having there Social, Intellectual, Educational and other part of their lifestyle has been be-littled and over looked by so Professional working in our Community. For Centuries,Illness of all kind have been looked upon and has disredited mankind of their rights and Equal Oppourtunities. This Matter needs to be Addressed, and raise more awareness in around Ealing, Hammersmith and WestLondon. In order for others to comphrend not to take health for granted, and how to treat suffers with respect and empathy. Thanks for taking the time in reading and posting my Reply.
Hi Steve,
I would like to say how pleasing it is to have an MP,who works so hards and has the
manners to reply to E Mails etc, where many other do not!!!!
The people of Ealing North are very lucky to have you.
Dear Steve,
When I was a student I used to be inspired by the concept of “Human right”, however now days the same rights have been invoked to protect the criminals such as the Iraqi Kurd who left 12 year girl to die after hit and run. For him, judge felt that deporting him back to Iraq would breach his right to a private and family life with his children. We would like to know what the MP’s and your self will do so that the human rights are not abused by the criminals and thugs of this society.
Apparently there is plan to cut more then 10,000 police officers in England and Wales. As a new resident in Northolt/Greenford area I am must worried about burglary and theft. I would like to know if police cut will affect my area too, and if so what will you do to keep our area safe?
